BullsPierre SpiesThe Vodacom Bulls will be without regular captain Pierre Spies for a large part of the 2014 rugby season after he was ruled out of rugby due to an arm injury on Monday.

Spies again suffered a bicep muscle injury to his upper arm, the same injury that sidelined him in June last year, resulting in the no 8 missing the remainder of the 2013 season.

Media release

According to Vodacom Bulls team doctor Org Strauss, the player complained about pain in his bicep after the Stormers warm-up match.

A MRI scan and ultrasound of the area was done and did not show any damage, but as the pain did not go away after the opening Vodacom Super Rugby match against the Sharks, two other opinions were also called for.

These specialists found bleeding and rupture of the bicep after more scans and decided upon immediate action.

Spies will be operated on this week at Unitas Hospital and will miss at least six months of rugby.

Commenting on the loss of the influential player, Vodacom Bulls coach Frans Ludeke, admitted it being a setback.

“Especially as we recently just lost Arno (Botha) for the rest of the season. Both players are Springboks, were an important part of our game plan and contributed tremendously in the leadership category. But we have learned by now that you have to adapt when the injury bogey strikes, so we will have to adjust accordingly,” Ludeke said.

In other injury news, Strauss confirmed that Deon Stegmann will be seeing a specialist on Wednesday regarding his groin injury.

Dean Greyling sprained an ankle against the Cheetahs on Friday night, but will train on Wednesday.

Mornè Mellett has been declared fit, following his back strain.

The Spies injury does not bother me, Deon Stegmann is of more concern… as is hooker, scrumhalf, flyhalf end fullback!

Arno Botha injuring the same knee, Spies the same bicep. Back in action to soon, bad nutrition or just bad conditioning?

The battle of the long knives , will it end like a fairy tale and both coaches fall on their respective swords?
    Toetie vs FL

I see some scathing attacks in the press on AC and i know some lynch mob will be ready at Loftus soon.

    @ superBul:
And I think it will be coming after F. Ludicrous if the Bulls put in another poor performance on Saturday, and lose against the Lions.

    @ superBul:
I didn’t rate him when he coached the Lions, and he was only able to capitalise on the depth built by HM. Now that he has lost a huge pool of talented players through poor contracting, his shortcomings as a coach are being exposed.

    @ Lion4ever:
Look he took over the rich culture of the Bulls. I was so disappointed by HM when he walked away from the Bulls because he had nothing more to prove. But in hindsight he did what Kallis did , walked too early and left a lot of record on the table.

He could easily take 4 S14 titles in a row, he was on a roll and the referees was in the same state of awe with his team and his status as they were with the Crusaders.I admit our first win was a lucky one against the Sharks , but that mean machine was rolling and the referees was aware of the greatness. Just like the benifit of doudt always goes to Richy McCaw so it went our way against the Sharks.

The shock of his departure derailed the Bulls at the start of the next season, but when they recovered from it they went unbeaten for weeks. The next 2 seasons was a continuance for that great team. HM could in my view made history by winning it 4 years in a row.

The Team was broken up since and the fact that HM took so many of our great minds with him to the Boks is where the whole thing went pear shaped.

Our biggest loss was the Contracting Guru(cant get his name now)
Xander is a bloody agent. He is useless.

It was Ian Schwartz… the contracting guru.

    @ grootblousmile:
Hell and we miss him, look what he is doing at the Boks. We are moving towards the NZ model. And believe me he will get it right.

Bad news for Britany, good news for the Bulls and Boks!

Pity to read about this injury to Spies. Hope the op goes well and at least we have him back to full fitness for the Currie Cup.

With these long term injuries to Botha and Spies it just highlights even more what a pity it is that Jean Cook left, looking at the Cheetahs teams for their first two games he will be getting more splinters there than he would have had he stayed with us Bulls!
