The possibility of eight teams playing in next year’s Currie Cup Premier Division still exists, a report indicates.

After the proposal to expand the Currie Cup to eight teams in 2014 was withdrawn before being put to vote at a SARU Special General Council Meeting last Friday, it appeared as though the current status quo of six teams in the top flight will remain for next season.
However, a new proposal is reportedly being discussed by all the unions, which could see eight teams in the top flight next year.
According to this proposal the EP Kings would gain automatic promotion to the Premier Division, while Griquas – who were relegated by the Pumas – would have to fight it out for the remaining spot with the other smaller unions.
The EP Kings could get a free ride to the top, on the condition that they agree to not play the promotion-relegation match against the lowest-ranked South African Super Rugby side next year.
This would see the remaining teams – Griquas, Falcons, Griffons, SWD, Boland, Leopards and Border – fight it out for the final spot in the top division.
The smaller unions are apparently in favour of Griquas not gaining automatic promotion and also want a shot at the big time. This qualification competition could then take place after next year’s Vodacom Cup competition.
The report further indicates that the EP Kings would only be assured of a place in the Currie Cup Premier Division for 2014, with the bottom two teams in next year’s event again playing to qualify for the 2015 edition with the First Division teams.
Common sense MUST prevail in this issue.
(Mind you, in the hallowed halls of SARU, common sense is not so common!!!!!)
So what right do the EP Kings have that will automatically ensure that they have a spot in the CC Premiership next year? Shouldn’t Griquas have that right first, as they are the team that was relegated.

Look i dont often go on and on about SARU, i leave it to you others who knows better.
The Kings originally had a 2 year guaranteed participation. Then it changed to only one year. Now the last team in Superugby gets a 2 year deal , when will this change. Maybe tomorrow, this is absolute madness.
SA Rugby must accommodate the EP region, they can justify it many ways.
We here are sometimes so stuck in the old regime thinking it is becoming embarrassing.
We cried for almost 2 weeks about the injustice of the Romain Piote Test, the whole World cried with us and now the case is forgotten, we hensoped (ons het gekapituleer daar sal niks verder daarvan kom nie, want wie is lus om nog te praat oor die anus horibulis van skeidsregters?)
Die NMMU was beroof in die Varsity Cup, dit is vergete. Maar gaan lees die wedstryd “report” op verskeie web blaaie, soos SS en dit wys hoe swak die skeidsregters was.
Die uitspeel tussen die Lions en die Kings presies dieselfde. Gaan terug en erken dat die Kings n wonderlike vars briesie was in 2013.
Dit is n tragedie dat die streek deur persoonlike haat geen kans gegun word nie.
Dit is ook tragies dat die spelers van die Kings nou opgeraap is deur die Elite Super spanne terwyl almal hul (Kings) afgelag het aan die begin van die seisoen.
Ag nou Ja ek los dit dan nou maar, maar ek weet haat vreet mens op.

Ek se nog altyd, Kings wil net in top flight rugby speel. En hulle, net soos die Pumas en Grikwas verdien dit.
Wat sirkus SARU nodig het is ‘n ou soos Luyt of Craven. Iemand wat eenvoudig voet neersit en se, dis hoe dit gaan wees, f*k die res.
SA sal NOOOOIIIT!!! die beste span in die wereld wees nie, en ons sal altyd aan die agterspeen suig en suier en tevrede moet wees om te kan se “ten minste is ons tweede beste!”, solank as wat provinsialisme ‘n kwessie is in SA.
Hierdie is nie ‘n besluit ten bate van die groei, uitbreiding en ontwikkeling van die spel in SA nie. Nee. Dis ‘n kwessie van “maar ek wil ook speel mamma” deur die kleiner unies.
So die boland en die griffons wil ook premier liga speel?
Ek weet die Kings het nou nie juis die uitklop fase gewen nie. Maar sou enige van daai ander spanne die Rebels of Lions kon wen die jaar?
Of gelykop speel met die Brumbies?
Sedert die Kings gestig is in 2010, was hulle nog elke jaar in die top 2 spanne in die 1ste liga, en hulle het dit 2 keer gewen. F*k, dis net soveel trofees as wat WP in dieselfde tyd gewen het.
2014, currie cup, Bulls, Sharks, Lions, Cheetahs, WP, Grikwas, Kings en Pumas. Ten bate van die Bok, nie die unies. Klaar.

In the 1980’2 Natal just COULDN’T beat the likes of NOFS (Griffons), Eastern Transvaal (Valke) etc to get into the CC Premiership, so the then SARFU (or was it SARB) “made a plan”.
They amalgamated the two divisions for a number of years with (I think) 2 pools, and later split it again.
Natal grasped the opportunity and never looked back.
The excuse used then by the authorities was that all of the “test Unions” should be playing in the top tier of the Currie Cup.
Despite my bad feelings towards the way in which the Lions were excluded from SR in 2013, and my venting of anger towards SARU for how they managed it, I have to admit that the Lions’ performances over the last 10-12 years showed that they didn’t deserve to be playing in the competition.
That the Kings franchise area has shown massive developmewnt in terms of it’s junior teams at schoolboy level(s) goes without saying, and the fact that they have in recent years had a VERY SUCCESSFUL acadamy running in PE shows that they at least are doing the development in THE RIGHT AREAS. Something I’m afraid that my beloved Lions fail to do year after year.
SARU MUST FIND A WAY TO ACCOMODATE THE EASTERN CAPE IN TOP FLIGHT RUGBY.
Failure to do so IMHO will just be another inditement of the overall failings of SARU in their “ownership” of Rugby Union in SA.
