Flip van der MerweFlip van der Merwe of South Africa has been cited for alleged foul play during a Rugby Championship match at the weekend.

Van der Merwe is alleged to have contravened Law 10.4 (a) Punching or Striking when he made contact with Australian winger Joe Tomane. The incident occurred in the 39th minute of the match between South Africa and Australia at DHL Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday 28 September.

The referee for the match, Jerome Garces, issued a Yellow Card for the incident.

Upon further review of the match footage the Citing Commissioner deemed in his opinion the incident had met the Red Card threshold for foul play.

The Citing is to be considered in the first instance by SANZAR Duty Judicial Officer Nigel Hampton QC.

All SANZAR disciplinary matters are in the first instance referred to a Duty Judicial Officer hearing to provide the option of expediting the judicial process.

For a matter to be dispensed with at this hearing, the person appearing must plead guilty and accept the penalty offered by the DJO.

Ridicules citing and yellow card. Tomane ran into his elbow. It was accidental. Thats rugby.

    @ leon:
I disagree with you; Flip is walking penalty, not the 1st time that he has been carded for foul play and won’t be the last. I am all for hard rugby and ferrous tackling but dirty play , deliberately trying to hurt an opponent has no place in the game

Flip banned for a week(News 24). He received a ‘discount’ based on his good disciplinary record…. Wink
