Demetri CatrakilisThe reports suggesting that flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis has signed a two-year deal with Western Province Rugby, has now officially been confirmed by Western Province Rugby, which will see him remain in the Cape for a further two years after the 2013 Absa Currie Cup tournament.

Catrakilis returned to Cape Town after the 2013 Vodacom Super Rugby season, initially on a loan deal, but has now put pen to paper on a full-time basis for another two seasons.

WP head coach Allister Coetzee said: “Demetri knows our structures and systems and it’s great news to have him back here – for the Currie Cup and beyond. He left us to gather Super Rugby experience and he has come back with that (Super Rugby) knowledge and the confidence to continue contributing for DHL Western Province and the DHL Stormers. Demetri will hopefully be back in action in the next two weeks (from his shoulder injury) and we look forward to seeing him back on the field in the 2013 Absa Currie Cup competition.”

Twenty-four-year-old Catrakilis has played 34 matches for DHL Western Province since his debut in 2011, scoring a total of 425 points.

Of those 425 points, 136 came in the 2012 Currie Cup tournament – including a match-winning haul of 17 in last year’s final in Durban – and he also notched up 127 points during WP’s victorious 2012 Vodacom Cup campaign.

Coetzee added: “It’s well-documented what Demetri achieved in last year’s Currie Cup, so we’re lucky to be able to call upon him, Gary van Aswegen and Kurt Coleman – not to mention youngsters like Tim Swiel and Dillyn Leyds, who have done so well in the WP Under-21 team – in the WP No 10 jersey.”

Talking about player signings, not related to WP, but is it true that Blue Bulls Cornell Hess and Ruan Snyman have signed for Griquas from 2014 and they signed Dustin Jinka?

Interesting, where did you hear about those rumours?

Catrakilis would have done better signing with the Sharks or Bulls.

Hello GBS sorry just popped in briefly earlier and only got chance now on site again, someone mentioned this on the Blue Bulls site.

Another player to be subjected to player rotation policies starving him of gamtime and ruining a potentially decent carreer.

As soon as Peter Grant even logs on to a website to look at ticket prices to SA, AC will drop his “bread and butter” players and stick the “prodigal son” in the next team sheet.

@5 – I have to agree with this. I am a WP and Stormer supporter but this oke has had raw deals at WP from the start. And it is a bad signal that AC sends out to the players. Because DC was our curry cup winning flyhalf and then get shipped to PE. WP has been battling with flyhalf for the last 10 years and then we finally get a proper flyhalf and he gets sold to the Kings. Grant has never been a good flyhalf, sure he has a good goal kicking record but other than that he does not have much. Van Aswegen is also so injury prone. I really think it is time for AC and Fleckie to go. They dont seem to know how to work with young players.

You seem to be as lone a voice in WP circles as I am in Lions’ circles!
