OK, let’s look at the newbies who performed:

Cheslin Kolbe was solid… was watched like a hawk, but he can feel good about his game.
Pat Howard is a bloody strong centre.. think he’s got a good future.

Not much else to get excited about in the WP side, to be honest.

Jono Ross played hard, led well.
Jacques du Plessis is one chap to watch for the future.
Wiaan Liebenberg did bloody well at openside, did not stand back for anybody.
The 2 young Blue Bulls locks, Paul Willemse and Grant Hattingh will do what’s needed, I have faith in them.
Morné Mellet… what a boykie at loosehead.
    Frik Kirsten… massive at tighthead.
Marcell van der Merwe also had a very solid game.

Rudy Paige was slow and cumbersome.
Tony Jantjies was Ok, but the Blue Bulls need better from a pivot.

Francois Venter ran hard… was OK.
Ulrich Beyers distributed well… eventually… and got more and more into the game.
Travis Ismaiel did not do too well.
Sampie Mastriet shows some promise at this level, pity the Blue Bulls backline could not fire earlier to give him more chances.

From the bench Ruan Snyman injected some urgency…never liked the chap, but he silenced me tonight.
Jean Cook has a massive future, he will grow into a real terror! His try was powerful and spectacular.

Now to add David Bullbring, Vleis Engelbrecht, Bandise Maku and Handré Pollard… to the mix.

Blue Bulls forwards will be Ok, they will not be the Blue Bulls downfall.

Couple of simple moves in the backline and the Bulls backline could develop nicely… Let Ruan Snyman start at scrummie, place Handré Pollard next to him… with Tiaan Snyman as backup flyhalf. Start with Clayton Blommetjies on left wing in place of Travis Ismaiel… and let the current centre combination of Venter and Beyers grow… specially on defence.

214: my blou tjom, Tiaan Snyman het al laaaankal ophou rugby speel ! 😉

Soek hierdie Bulle span as almal gesond is: Visser Blommetjies/Akona (dalk sy ervaring nodig onder die jongmanne?) Murray Venter Mastriet Pollard Snyman Vleis Cook Ross JDP Willemse Mellet Maku Frik

    215 @ ben-die-bul:
Sorry man, ek het bedoel Tiaan Schoeman… die Junior Bloubul wat losskakel speel / gespeel het… is hy nog by die Bulls betrokke?

Hy was nog betrokke, begin 2013….

Hy is myle beter as Tony Jantjies!

  • 217

    Wow!
    Well done Bulletjies!

Hierdie span gaan nog GROOT rugby speel, glo my.

  • 218

    217 @ Pietman:
Ek weet van klomp WP mense wie se gesigte moer lank is vanaand….

  • 219

    @ grootblousmile:

  • 221

    @ grootblousmile:
    Maak so, ek ook!
Nite eers bruvva, ek gaan pisvelle opsoek, tjorts.

  • 222

    @ grootblousmile:

Missed the final 10 minutes or so. How does WP have the ability to shatter ones dreams year after year before the tournament has even got past the first hurdle?

Firstly congratulations Bulls, you deserved to win with that absolute commanding of the scrum (and to a lesser extent, the line out), just a shame you didn’t have a bit more experience behind the scrum, because after the forwards efforts, you certainly deserved to.

As for the Poppies, could it get any worse. This is one of the more experienced scrums in the comp, and we were manhandled by one of the most inexperienced. abysmal showing. The back line does have some potential, but GvA certainly came back down to earth with a loud bump today. After the way Toetie was talking him up in the press after his last outing against the Bulls, one would have thought he was the next messiah. After this performance he wasn’t much more than the next mess!

WP, as with the Stormers just seem to lack the mongrel edge needed to turn all that talent into a winning unit. They never looked like they really wanted the win. And with all the prodigious talent on offer, they’re certainly not being coached to win.

Lets hope they improve, thats all we can ask for, because they sure as hell not going to get rid of the driftwood coach.

Mellet was my man of the match. Awesome play in the tight and loose, closely followed by Jacques du Plessis. Spinstad must have been the blind adjudicator, thats the only reason I can give for Ntubeni getting it.

    Well done Bulls
Not sure if congratulating them on the draw is condescending?, but its not intended in the way it sounds but I do think they are the happier of the two sides this morning.
The result was a surprise for many, but I don’t want to say Province was poor, because then it would detract from the effort of a very young Bull side.
I’m not happy with WP, this is not a result we as supporters were expecting or hoping for, but let’s leave it at that.
The results of the 1st round was not was most expected, so maybe after a couple of rounds a more clear picture of which teams look more likely to make the top 4 will emerge.

Got zero points on my bru… and it was still a good weekend.

    223 @ Just For Kicks:
Pity 4Skinstad’s not a couple of years younger.

I’m sure there’s some Japanese or French club with too much cash lying around that would pay handsomely to have him grace their backline, and in so doing we could get his shyte opinions off the telly!

What a prize prat he has been of late.

The likes of Nick Mallet and John Mitchell must cringe when they hear they have to work with him of a weekend.

    223 @ Just For Kicks:
    224 @ nortierd:
    222 @ MacroBull:
Howzit chaps, and thanks for the levelheaded comments.

Must say, last night and still this morning the draw DOES feel more like a win, because I really expected the Blue Bulls to get snotted… my Bru pick was Province by 20 and it really hurt me to put a pick in like that.

I’m so glad the Blue Bulls youngsters stood up to be counted, but we must now be weary that it was’nt a pumped up once-off event and that those Bullies can repeat this stellar performances week after week.

Like Kickers says, had the Blue Bulls had a halfback pairing who knew what they were doing and with the Blue Bulls forwards dominance (specially in the 2nd Half), they could have run rampant.

What was specially pleasing was the strong scrumming performance of the Blue Bulls, after a less than stellar Super Rugby season where Dean Greyling and Werner Kruger were very iffy and vulnerable. I take my hat off to Morné Mellet and Frik Kirsten… they showed Pine Pienaar and Frans Ludeke very clearly why they need to be starting props from hereon in! Great to see Marcell van der Merwe has also recovered from his long term injury, he also looked good!

The Blue Bulls backline could not get going and had no rhytm in the first half, looked clumsy and looked as if they had no clue where and how to attack, but eventually when there was much crisper service from replacement scrumhalf, Ruan Snyman, they started to look good too, with Francois Venter running hard at the gaps and with Ulrich Beyers coming more and more into the picture till he was subbed by Waylon Murray. I Still cannot get to like Waylon Murray and I suppose I never will like him.

Sampie Mastriet looked good on the wing, Jurgen Visser had a good game at fullback, but Travis Ismaiel did not have a lekker day at left wing, and things looked better with Clayton Blommetjies at left wing.

Regarding WP… things gelled early on for them… and then they waned as the Bulls forwards took control… was very strange to see. Gary van Aswegen and the 3 Province props all had mares of note!
Gio Aplon looked sharp, so too Cheslin Kolbe and Pat Howard and Damian de Allende can feel satisfied too, but ultimately it was the Province tight 5 which were out muscled and outgunned and Deon Fourie and his fellow loosies were quite ill-diciplined, it seemed almost like they wanted to play the man in stead of the ball.

No major WP shift needed (except at prop), just a few tweaks here and there and they’ll be great.

hahaha daar gee my ou afgeskryfte spannetjie my n lekker groot middel vinger,
