England won the toss and elected to bat at a cloudy, but dry Chester-Le-Street with an unchanged side. With the Ashes in their pockets, thanks to the draw in Manchester, England were hoping to keep the Australians winless in the series. The Australians made one change in the quickie, Jackson Bird, who came in for Mitchell Starc. The pitch was hard and dry and swing was expected.
England put up a first innings score of 238 runs, all out and Australia replied with 270 all out. England’s second innings delivered 330 runs, all out.
On Day 4 the target set for Australia in their 2nd innings was 299 to win the match. Australia started well and with over a third of the runs in the bag, they lost their 1st wicket, then in the early 170’s they lost the plot and lost a number of wickets in the space of a few runs. After that the wickets kept falling in regular intervals and almost at close of play on Day 4 England bagged the last wicket to win by 74 runs.

Kickers, I have updated the scores as at Stumps, Day 3.
So 202 runs ahead with 5 wickets in hand, not a bad position for England especially considering they were 49/3 at one point today. They just need to concentrate there is lots of time left in this test so the last thing they want to do is lose quick wickets in the morning, even if they only score 70 in the first session its alright as long as they still have wickets in hand going into the second session. A lead of 250 would give their bowlers something to bowl with but still should feel more comfortable to be at least 300 ahead.
It certainly looks as if there should be a result in this game, but time could be lost on Monday especially in afternoon with showers so that may be a factor, although they should play most of Tuesday if they need to.

Hello JFK interesting that you mention Nic Compton, as have been thinking of him before England starting batting in this test but more in the context of the selection of Jonny Bairstow. Thought that if England are consistent in their selection policy and were going to be as ruthless with him as they were Compton then he simply had to come up with a big score in this test. But that hasn’t happened so surely he must be one to get the chop for last test, maybe for Morgan, or depending on how well England due another youngster who is doing well on the county circuit.

What a day of Test cricket, it ebbed and flowed, bobbed and weaved but England have come through thanks to an inspirational spell of bowling from Stuart Broad. Australia were in great shape at 109 for 0 chasing 299 to win but Broad ripped into the Australians and his 6 for 50 has given England victory by 74 runs and an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Ashes. They have won the Urn for the third series in a row, congratulations to Alastair Cook and his team.

Belated congratulations to England, what a turn around in the cricket when it looked as if Australia were cruising to what was a challenging target on that pitch in those conditions.
