Tonderai ChavangaThe Cheetahs have further bolstered their backline for this year’s Currie Cup, by signing former Springbok wing Tonderai Chavanga. Incidently Chavanga also started his age group rugby with the Cheetahs, so he is also returning to his roots.

Chavanga who has recently played for the Newport Gwent Dragons in Wales, was with the Cheetahs on trail, but got injured without getting a run. Regardless of that Cheetahs coach Naka has offered him a contract for the Currie Cup, and if he performs he might get a nod for next year’s Super Rugby. Chavanga joins Wian du Preez and Piet Lindeque as new additions to the Currie Cup squad.

Chavanga is a vastly experienced winger, equally adept at playing fullback, so he adds great depth to the Cheetahs who may have to be without winger Raymond Rhule for The Rugby Championship.

Chavanga played 28 matches for the Dragons, scoring 10 tries. He has also represented the Stormers and Lions at various levels including Super Rugby. He also still holds the record for the most tries in a Test match as a Springbok (6 versus Uruguay).

The Free State Cheetahs squad for this year’s Currie Cup looks a decidedly different beast to the injury depleted side of last year, who had to endure the humiliation of playing a relegation series against the EP Kings. This year they could well take their Super Rugby success into the Currie Cup.

A step backwards, unless we got him cheap.
He is waaaaaaay to injury prone.
Buying of old washed up injury prone players is really more of a Sharks thing.

    @ Loosehead:
Lol, now now Loskoppie, play nicely. He could add value if as you say he remains injury free. He has pace to burn, and gven the Cheetahs style of play he could get the space he needs to run free.

Don’t think the Cheetahs broke the bank, Tondie is likely desperate for a contract

It’s only for the Currie Cup. Wonder if the Cheetahs are still after Cornal Hendricks, after the contract dispute with SA Rugby at the beginning of the year.
