Vodacom Bulls captain Pierre Spies will be out for the rest of the 2013 rugby season after tearing a bicep muscle on Saturday while playing for the Springboks against Samoa in the Castle Lager Incoming Series.
Spies saw two specialists, one in Johannesburg and one in Pretoria for opinions and ultrasound scans revealed the damage. He will be operated on today.
According to Vodacom Bulls team doctor Org Strauss, this operation will rule Spies out for the remainder of the season.
It’s not Spies that worries me… it’s the scrumhalf situation… with Jano & Hougie doubtful.
Bulls need to show some ingenuity here and possibly use the SA Under 20 star, Jacques du Plessis, at blindside, with Dewald Potgieter moving to No 8. Alternatively Grant Hattingh must cover at No 7, with Dewald at No 8.
In both instances it might make sense to have Jean Cook on the bench.
Anybody know how far away Duane Vermeulen is to playing again after injury… with The Rugby Championship in mind?

Having played on Sunday and quite a lot for the Baby Boks during the tournament plus also not sure when they arrive/arrived home would it be wise to through the 19 year old du Plessis straight in to Super rugby game. Don’t forget the star loose forwards from last year that we have Wian Liebenberg and Shaun Adendorff who could also be used and maybe ahead in the queue, also there is Johnno Ross who while not experienced at Super level has a good deal more experience of senior rugby.

Forgot GBS that Rudy Paige is there as an option for scrumhalf and you have said before you rate him highly, but still think the plan I mentioned here to you last night could work wonders, can’t find PRO12 fixture lists for new season but last season it started late in August and the first round of Heineken Cup games is only the weekend of 11th October so we could try get Matawalu in and he could be available for rest of the Super rugby season. Go on have a word with the powers that be 🙂

Wian Liebenberg has potential but Adendorf is a penalty liability, a big one. Whereas he is industrious, his mind abandons him at times.
Jono Ross is a good option, but having seen Jacques du Plessis play for the Bokkies… he has basically put the work in of at least 3 good players per game, his conditioning is excellent and he’s got huge heart! He was by FARRRRRRRRR the Best Bokkies forward in the competition, he tackles like a demon, has good hands, takes the ball up well…. a typical blindsider… a huge find for the future!

Is Rudy Paige still with the Bulls or was he released back to the Lions… because he sure is way better than Ruan Snyman, and if both Hougie and Jano is still out for weeks, then he would be my starter too.
Always sad when a player gets injured.
Bulls was spared earlier in the season, sadly now that it counts our team is badly struck. I think the season is structured stupid. Its almost a short 6 week playoff now,so many questions will be answered in these weeks it almost makes no sense the previous 5 to 6 months of hard battle.
Who will hit his straps from the start now? The Sharks for example had a 5 week off season, and they used their off season to turn the apple car upside down.

Thanks for the background on those players sounds like Adendorf can work on his discipline. Yip read lots of people rated du Plessis very highly for the Junior Boks and there is no doubt he showed lots of class then but also didn’t really read much good said about the rest of the pack so maybe he shone even more due to the mediocrity around him?
All the info I’ve seen indicates that Rudi Paige must be permanently at the Bulls/Blue Bulls as it has it that he played Currie Cup for us last year and was in our Vodacom Cup squad this year. Also see he captained 2007 SA Schools and played U20 for the Bokkies in 2009 so he does have some pedigree maybe just not given enough playing time so hopefully he will shine if given an extended run. See you not keen on going ahead with my request for the bosses at Loftus 😉
