Vermaak, one of only two scrumhalves in the training squad, picked up a grade one hamstring tear during Saturday’s Vodacom Super Rugby match between the Vodacom Bulls and the Toyota Cheetahs in Pretoria.

Following a medical examination at the Springbok training camp on Sunday, it was decided that Vermaak will not be able to train with the squad on Monday or Tuesday.

“With Francois Hougaard also unable to train, we needed cover at scrumhalf and decided to bring Cobus to Cape Town,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

“He was the next scrumhalf on our list and has been very good for The Sharks this season. He’s still young and has a promising career ahead of him, so it would be good to get to know him better and also for him to see what our plans are for the season.”

The 23-year-old Reinach, whose late father, Jaco, played for the Springboks in the 1980s, made his Vodacom Super Rugby debut last season. He played in all of The Sharks’ matches this season and will join the Springbok training squad at their base in Cape Town on Monday morning.

We don’t have bad scrumhalves in SA.

3 Youngsters in particular show much promise… Cobus Reinach of the Sharks, Nic Groom of the Stormers and Piet van Zyl of the Cheetahs…. but none of the 3 are ready for Bokke honours and all 3 have shown a lot of inconsistency. Remember 2 weeks ago when Nic Groom basically cost the Stormers 17 points against the Cheetahs in Blingfontein. Same with Piet van Zyl, does the dumbest shit sometimes and Cobus Reinach sometimes makes one wish the freegin Sharks would just throw McLeod on as a sub.

That said, the incumbants for the Bokke, Hougaard and Ruan Pienaar, have not exactly played wonderfully either… and Jano Vermaak also has his shortcomings.

Sarel Pretorius is another case in point… brilliant on attack but less than very average on defence.

Hougaardt is predictable as a book and he gives away clues what his going to do or going to box kick that is why the Kiwi’s can rearrange their back three so good.

Sarel Pretoruis and defense. Will that be that miss a lot of tackles stats that you guys are saying his defense is bad? Did Werener Swanepoel had a good defense? If he goes for a interception and miss it its marked as miss tackle and its not his job to bring the big guys down. Backs must just hold them up for the forwards to cream them
