Nice. I love this sort of thing. Too many missed tackles bt the Cheetahs, but man that Pieter Lab. is putting in some work.

I think that the leading SA tackler last year was Marcell Coetzee and he made something around 120 odd for the season. Lappies has 95 already. Amazing.

Looking at these stats one can see why teams are were they are.

    Take the Bulls
Lineouts great, so they play to that strength and won against teams who gave them the opportunity to play to it.
But then look who is our best turnover man , Zane
We also have far too many candidates in the top 5 for missed tackles

Nice to play with accumulated stats instead of percentage ones. Some players might have low tallies because they played fewer games.
Morne would have been further clear if he started the last game too.

Bulls definately kick way too much,
    2. Morne Steyn (Bulls) 45
    11. Jano Vermaak (Bulls) 26

    @ superBul:
These stats are from the Rugbyheaven website and the Turnover stat is apparently a bot misleading, it’s not turnovers affected but rather turnovers conceded. Hookers are popular in this list for obvious reasons, look at Deon Fourie, he cannot throw a ball in straight and so concedes a lot of turnovers.

If it were turnovers affected then Quade Cooper would most definitely not be close to the top of the list and players like George Smith would be.

Check out the Pilfers section for the fetchers hall of fame. The Sharkies are doing well there.

yes one must not bet your house on the accuracy of stats, but still a nice article to argue around. You can interpret it the way you feel, and the rest will hunt you down. Pleasure

    @ superBul:
Steggies has a couple of pilfers, and the Bulls will be there come the business end of the comp, I would put real money on it.

If one compares the two stats they differ a bit , that’s OK with me. The same players appear at least in both and almost exactly in the same positions.
Whooow the Cheetahs are all over, stats wise. Mostly good too.
4 of them in tackles made,s top 10

Going to bed now with numbers in my head, will try counting the sheep before i fall asleep.

    @ Stormersboy:
The miss tackles stats are useless. If I attempt 2000 tackles and make miss a 100 of them will it be badder than the guy who attempted 200 tackles and miss 60? My miss tackle stat will say I miss the most tackles

  • 18

    @ Bliksem:
Absolutely, it has no context other than the 2013 season, so it has very limited use. The same site does break down the individual player stats per game, and you can drill down to specifics like tackle stats.

For example, they give 4 tackle numbers: Tackle attempted, tackles made, tackles missed and tackles ineffective (which is pretty close to tackles missed I guess.

Now lets look at the comparitive stats for Elton vs Pat against the Brumbies:

Pat attempted 14 tackles, missed 1 and had 3 ineffective.

Elton attempted 7, missed 2, no ineffective.

What this says to me is 2 things:

Firstly that their tackle completion rate is basically the same (%-wise)

Secondly, that Pat had to tackle twice as much as Elton. Now that is useful because it suggests that The Stormers’ loose forwards did a much better job of protecting Elton than the Sharks’ did.

Again if you then look at the loose forwards’ tackle stats it bears that out.

So in that context the relative performance of the two teams against the same opposition can be compared.

    @ Stormersboy:
Just one correction. Jantjies do not tackle. He plays touch rugby.
