oosthuizen and goosenJohan Goosen and Coenie Oosthuizen have given the Cheetahs a boost with news that the Springbok duo will be fit for the start of the Super Rugby season.

SuperSport

The Cheetahs’ fly-half and prop were both sidelined through ankle and neck injuries respectively last year, but are set to feature in the Bloemfontein-based side’s opening clash against the Sharks on 23 Februry.

“Coenie has been undergoing rehabilitation and its going very well so far,” coach Naka Drotske said.

“He hasn’t scrummed yet and hasn’t taken a lot of contact, but we’re sure he will be ready. He has to be given the go-ahead by the specialist, but if he says he is ready, then he will be.”

Drotske is also hoping to have star full-back Willie le Roux (groin), flank Lappies Labuschagne (ankle) and number eight Phillip van der Walt back in action, with former Sprngbok flank Heinrich Brüssow also pushing to be fit for the start of the season.

    @ Gena,
Interesting snippet of info. Neither the Sharks or Stormers have played against the Cheetahs, in Super Rugby with Goosen at flyhalf.

Once he found his feet after the opening 2 matches, he was a match winner of note. The Cheetahs Super Rugby record with Goosen at FH reads like this:

    Lions (away)lost by 2 points
Bulls (home) lost by 32 points
Brumbies (away) lost by a controversial 1 point (late penalty ???)
Rebels (away) won by 7 points
Crusaders (away) lost by 7 points
Hurricanes (away) won by 11 points
Lions (home) won by 21 points
Chiefs (home) lot by 7 points
Highlanders (home) lost by 3 points (Cheetahs were leading 30-9 when Goosen went off, and Sias cost us that match with his dreadful kicking)

In the 9 matches till Goosen got injured, they scored 22 tries with Goosen bagging a brace. He was also comfortably topping the score sheets at that stage.

By contrast, after Goosen got injured they only managed 13 tries in 7 matches, Losing to the Stormers twice (2 and 7), to the Sharks twice (14 and 17), and to the Bulls by 16. They managed to beat the Waratahs by 1, and the Western Force by 4.

The results in the matches after Goosens injury illustrates, that they could well have done better if he had not been out for the rest.

In my books he shows the most promise of any flyhalf we have had in more than a decade
Lambie is good and general favourite of most people, but Goosen can be on par with Carter and even better, time will tell

    @ Cheetah4eva:
Hello man, some interesting numbers you’ve posted and you are certainly promoting the Golden boy, just wondered though looking at that : when Goosen was playing you lost at home by 32 points to the Bulls, then when he wasn’t playing you only lost by 16 points away from home… Pondering just shows what one can do with stats, only kidding with you though just hope Goosen has a good Super rugby season for you in turn adding to Mr Meyer’s options at flyhalf.

Lol, true that, that is why I put in my safety net Who-s-the-man

The 1st two matches were Goosen’s learning curve lol. The fact is, the Cheetahs were a different animal, when Goosen was running the backline.. they looked lost and rudderless, when the Cheetahs tried to use a out ofd sorts Sias, and then later Smit.

He is a class act! Star Struck
