“Fit-again Springbok flanker Schalk Burger has resumed the DHL Stormers captaincy and will lead the Cape side during the 2013 Vodacom Super Rugby season.

Burger was the designated DHL Stormers captain last year but his 2012 campaign lasted just 14 minutes before suffering a season-ending knee injury against the Hurricanes in Round One.

DHL Stormers head coach Allister Coetzee also confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that centre Jean de Villiers would continue as the team’s vice-captain.

Coetzee said: “Now that he is fit, Schalk will resume the DHL Stormers captaincy in 2013.

“We are, however, blessed with an incredibly strong leadership base in every position. Schalk will have the Springbok captain in Jean de Villiers to lean on, an Absa Currie Cup-winning captain in Deon Fourie and I haven’t even mentioned the likes of Andries Bekker, Tiaan Liebenberg, Duane Vermeulen, Dewaldt Duvenage and Bryan Habana – all of whom are leaders in their positions.”

The squad has been in Hermanus since Monday and the coach expressed his delight at the work done so far.

“We’ve upped the rugby-specific side of things this week, but we’re also having a bit of fun and the guys have responded really well,” said Coetzee.

“We’ve still got two days to go after this, including a fun adventure race on Friday, and then we will turn our attention to next month’s warm-up matches.”

The DHL Stormers will face the Cheetahs on 2 February (in Bloemfontein) and the Boland Cavaliers on 9 February (in Wellington).”

My drinking glass is a special one with a sandblasted image of Schalk on it, it has been gathering dust for far to long now
I am so chuffed to hear this, Jean can assist from the back and their are other good leaders in the Stormers set-up as well as the article said

Bring it on lads, Stormers will be ready

I rate Schalk highly always have, I just wonder if this is a good thing to make him captain again after being away from the game for a year? What message does it send to Jean? I am sure Jean will be okay with it, but he did do a fine job last year and their were some new youngsters that played under him.

    2 @ Puma:
    their = there

It gives Jean a break, he is the Bok captain after all (less continious pressure) – so no “messages” to anyone
Same as with John Smit and the Sharks and few years back – they just mange their players this way

Short sighted mistake, but good luck Schalla.

Schalk is an excellent captain. Hard on Jean though.

How can it be hard on Jean considering Schalk was always the captain. Besides he is the captain of the national team. How selfish can one be wanting to catain everything?

  • 9

8 @ Bliksem: uhm, where doesit say that he wants to? Itis hard on Jean as most think that he did well as captain. Would HM of made him Bok captain if Spoes or Burger were available? Who knows?

Find it hard why some see this as an issue, really
Do they really think the coach would not have had extensive talks with both parties, taking everything into consideration.
Do they really think he would make a blanket decision without consulting all and sundry on what the impact would be
Do they really think he would make up his mind and not carefully consider team morale, Jean himself as a person and risk all they have gained last season.
    Do they really think? period

This team had how many under 21 players in their ranks last season, and they achieved what again? – they play for each other, that the main reason the Stormers are
consistently performing so well. Now the coach will not come and mess with that, not will Schalk allow it, this was a joined decision.

    @ Loosehead:
So why did you feel sorry for him then?

  • 12

11 @ Bliksem: please point where I said that I feel sorry for him. A quote will suffice.
