Gloucester looseforward Andy Hazell was suspended for 14 weeks as sanction following a Disciplinary Hearing in Dublin after being Red Carded and Cited in the Amlin Challenge Cup Pool 1, Round 1 match against Mont-de-Marsan at Stade Guy Boniface on Thursday 11 October.

In one of the more brutal and serious incidents in recent years, Andy Hazell was given a Red Card for an incident in the 55th minute of the match for striking (or rather for bating up) Mont-de-Marsan replacement, Sebastien Ormaechea.

No less than four punches and a knee to the facial area, whilst Ormaechea was lying prone on the ground in a very defencelass postion.

Here is the shocking video:

The Judicial Officer, Roger Morris, heard evidence and submissions from Hazell, Gloucester Rugby Director of Rugby Nigel Davies and from ERC Disciplinary Officer Roger O’Connor. Hazell pleaded guilty to the charges.

The Judicial Officer determined that Hazell had intentionally struck Ormaechea with both the fist and the knee.

Having also determined that any suspensions he would impose for the offences would run concurrently and as striking with the knee carries greater penalties than striking with the fist under the IRB Recommended Sanctions for Offences Committed with the Playing Enclosure, the Judicial Officer decided on a top-end entry point of 16 weeks.

Taking into account aggravating factors, he added a further two weeks given Hazell’s disciplinary record and his failure to uphold the image of the game.

Then following consideration of Hazell’s guilty plea and his exemplary conduct during the hearing, the Judicial Officer deducted four (4) weeks before imposing a suspension of 14 weeks.

Hazell will be free to play on Monday 21 January 2013 again. Both ERC and the player have the right to appeal the decision.

Law 10.4(a) Striking another player with the hand, arm, fist or knee Under the IRB Recommended Sanctions for Offences Committed within the Playing Enclosure, Law 10.4(a), striking with the hand, arm or fist carries the following penalties:

  • Lower End: 2 weeks; Mid Range: 5 weeks; Top End: 8+ to 52 weeks.

Law 10.4(a), striking with the knee carries the following penalties:

  • Lower End: 3 weeks; Mid Range: 8 weeks; Top End: 12+ to 52 weeks.

Now THAT is a rugby THUG!

Jeeez, how do you repeatedly punch, then knee and then punch a guy again and again whilst he is lying prone without the chance of defence?

At least look the guy in the eyes whilst you both exchange punches…. dammit man!

14 Week ban for this is soft punishment!

    @ grootblousmile:

Rubbish suspention, that should be 2 years minimum.

    2 @ Sharks_forever:
In a Court of Law (almost anywhere in the world), that would constitute assault, a criminal act.

@ Sharks_forever: I actually watched that WP Sharks match again last night ans the punch on Deysel was a typical act of cowardice, it shows Deysel trying to get rid of the Pig then turning towards the loose maul to get on with rugby, Provocation pointed out my the clown TMo was a total joke.

TYpically most WP fans found this amusing and now thing they tough 😆 I wonder if they know the diferrence between rugby and thuggery?? Taking a cheap shot when the man is looking away and an actualy fight 😉 WHAT I DO HOWEVER KNOW IS THEY ARE WELCOME TO TRY THE SAME RUBBISH TOMORROW, Sharks will concentrate on the rugby as they did that day’

Now that is thuggery at its very worst. Should be banned for life. Not only reapted punching, but bloody knee kicking to the face.

    7 @ Puma:

    6 @ Sharks_forever:
I am nervous too. Still think too many are writing Province off, that is just plain daft. The game could go either way.

Excited for this game though. Can’t wait.

    GO SHARKS GO!

  • 10

    @ Puma:

Agree Puma, WP are far too glood a team to be written off, this means sharks will have to lift their game even more,

  • 11

Bah! Perez, got what 2 weeks for repeatedly punching Loock of the Pumas in the face? How many of his punches connected?

That SOB should have gotten at least 6 weeks, yet he is playing against the mighty Cheetahs tonight. Already Rhule man-shamed him, tonight Robert Ebersohn will teach him the finer arts!

  • 12

Well, is the guy on the ground trying to play dead? Why doesn’t he defend himself? Does he think that it will just go away if he just do nothing? He started it afterall.

That off the ball running into and falling on top of the player should also have been cited.

    @ Sharks_forever:
that’s a stupid statement! All the WP fans I know and myself included are very ashamed of what happened in that game. Can I assume now assume that all Shark fans are idiots because of your generalisation?

    @ Rugbyprof:
Mate read around the rugby blogs more, and see the comments, not so stupid trust me, it is still a huge joke, specially with a lot of WP supporters on Keo.And i said most, not ALL, you obviously part of the better WP support
