The exciting young Toyota Cheetahs flyhalf, Johan Goosen, has been ruled out of rugby for four months so he will miss the rest of the Super Rugby season, the Junior Wolrd Cup and any inclusion in the Springbok senior side for the June Tests as well as for the Castle Rugby Chamionship against New Zealand, Australia and Argentina, due to injury.

Johan Goosen freakily injured his right hand shoulder (the arm he carried the ball in) in Bloemfontein on Saturday in the unfortunate loss for the Toyota Cheetahs against the Highlanders in their Super Rugby clash, in the act of scoring a Cheetahs try. The injury appeared to be a hyper-extension of the shoulder and a possible shoulder dislocation, with no other player falling on or over that shoulder.

He was stretchered off in the match when the Cheetahs were leading 30 / 9 and had to sit on the sidelines and watch on as the Cheetahs allowed the Highlanders to come back and take the match 36 / 33.

Goosen confirmed via his Facebook Page that he will miss the rest of the Super Rugby season.

“Thanks for all the messages, appreciate it! ”

“I am out for four months,” said Goosen.

This of course impacts on his participation and representing the Baby Bokke in the IRB Junior World Cup in June, having been picked in the squad.

Many pundits also believed that Johan Goosen was destined to represent the Springboks senior side in the upcoming June Tests against England and later against the All Blacks, Wallabies and Pumas in the new Castle Rugby Championship (replacing the Tri-Nations Tournament).

At the time of his injury Goosen was the leading points scorer in Super Rugby for the 2012 season, with 145 points, 17 more than the Vodacom Bulls flyhalf Morné Steyn.

What is even more worrying is that Goosen’s previous shoulder injury a few weeks ago was to the left hand shoulder, which basically means that both of Goosen’s shoulders are prone to injury and weakened in the process. Part of Goosen’s rehabilitation process should therefore focus on strenghening both shoulders, not only to recover from this injury but to fix both shoulders in such a way that it will not be a hamper for the remainder of his rugby career, which we all hope is a long and very industrious one.

24@ Scrumdown:Agree, thats why I think it’s interesting how he will handle it, and how worried he is over the ‘provincialism’ tag. – He shouldn’t be, in my opinion, but then why state that intention in the beginning, if he’s not?

    30 @ Scrumdown:
True…. only the tree moerred me… and the Blik Met Wiele… and was the only one left standing!

  • 33

30@ Scrumdown:….and the tree won that one!

  • 34

    This is a travesty.

    34@ Loosehead:
What, that the tree won, or that Goosen is out?

  • 36

35@ Scrumdown: you mock me while I am at such a low time after hearing this bad news? You kick me while I am down?
Good man, I would do the same. Who-s-the-man

Howsit.. a bit late, but here we go.

I said this week on another thread that if the Cheetahs are kicked out for the sake of the Lions, it would be a outrage. I stick to that statement.
Watching them implode on the weekend was sad, shocking, disappointing… and more.
But lets be honest. They have only been playing SR for a few years.
How long did it take the Stormers, Bulls and Sharks to get it right?
And consider this… of all the “new” boys (Force, Lions, Rebels and Cheetahs) who would you vote as the best team?
Still maintain the Cheetahs are no walk overs, and could one day become a force to be reckoned with.

    BOK TEAM:
At loosehead, spoiled for choice. order should be Coenie, Beast, Kitshoff…IMO. Tight head is a headache. Malherbe has promise, but no. Doc is off his game. Kruger is not a Int. level player. Maybe WP?
Which brings me to my next point… could we see an all FS front row? Is it a bad thing?

Locks… Bekker should be in there. 4 is up for grabs.
    Loosies, easy. Brussouw, Burger, Spies.
9… well, we still have Pienaar. He is a lot better than he showed at the WC last year. Nar Div just did not know what to do with him. And then there is Pretorius. But I would still start with Hougaard. Give him time and support.

The BIG one… nr. 10. My order would be: Steyn, (Goosen), Lambie, Grant, Jantjies.
    11 STILL belongs to Habana.

    JPP should STILL play 14.

12 should go to Jean. Why? Well, this is going to be a young team, with some players probably playing out of position in the backline. We need some stability.

13 and 15 is up for grabs.

    thats my 2 cents

    @ grootblousmile:
Lol…was going to suggest you do that a week or so ago. Would love to see who you guys believe should be in the starting 15
