Johann Sadie - 3 Weeks

Wynand Olivier - Fit

Lionel Cronjé - Crocked

We all know rugby is not a sport for sissies, and so it was on Friday for Johan Sadie too, when he sustained an AC Jojnt injury after barely 11 minutes in the Super Rugby game against the Sharks, which will keep him out injured for about 3 weeks. The good news though is that Wynand Olivier is ready again to step into the fold again.

Lionel Cronjé, another of the signings from down South, is not so lucky though, he sustained a pectoral muscle tear which will have to be operated on, in the friendly game between the Vodacom Blue Bulls against the Sharks XV side.

Other Bulls still recovering include Arno Botha, Morné Mellett, Dewald Potgieter & Rossouw de Klerk.

Out of Action:

Johann Sadie has been ruled out of action for between two to three weeks after sustaining a shoulder injury against the Sharks on Friday.

According to the Vodacom Bulls team doctor, Org Strauss, Sadie suffered a grade one tear on his AC joint.

“He should recover in two to three weeks,” Strauss said.

Morné Mellett (shoulder) and Arno Botha (back) should report back for duty with Sadie.

Dewald Potgieter (arm, six weeks) and Rossouw de Klerk (foot, end of May) is recovering well.

Back in Action:

The Bulls team doctor, Org Strauss cleared Wynand Olivier, who just returned from a hand injury. Wynand was in the process of rehabilitation from an operation at the end of last season, when in January 2012 he broke a bone in his wrist, which should by now have fully recovered.

Wynand’s prolonged absense might have been a blessing in disguise, giving him effectively a month more to recover from the longer term injury.

Lionel Cronje:

The utility back, Lionel Cronjé, has been ruled out of the remainder of the Vodacom Super Rugby competition. The 22 year old Vodacom Bulls player suffered a pectoral muscle tear in his chest and will undergo an operation later in the week.

He injured himself on Friday while playing for the Blue Bulls Vodacom Cup side in a friendly match against the Sharks XV.

“Lionel will be operated on this week and he will be out of action for at least six months. I cannot see him playing Super Rugby this year,” Vodacom Bulls team doctor Org Strauss said.

Cronjé played for the Stormers in 2011 and had his season there disrupted when he tore knee ligaments. He has recovered well from that injury whilst in Pretoria and was due to make his Bulls debut in 2012.

“It is a big set-back to us for sure,” Vodacom Bulls coach Frans Ludeke admitted.

“Lionel was part of our plans en would have been very valuable for our tour to Australasia in a couple of week because he is so versatile. It is a real pity for Lionel as well, as he has worked really hard to get back to his best following his knee injury.”

A replacement will be named later if deemed necessary.

4 Responses to Super Rugby: Bulls – Johann Sadie out for 3 weeks & Lionel Cronjé out for the whole Super season, but Wynand Olivier back

Hope they start Venter at 12 and Wynand Olivier at 13 this weekend, like they did a few games in the Currie Cup. Think Lionel Cronje’s injury is a big blow for us. We’re really thin at fly-half now. Louis Fouche wouldn’t have been my second choice, although I like that he’s a big guy with a big boot. Further down I don’t really see Tony Jantjies as a viable option for Super rugby at the moment… Maybe it’s the break Derrick Hougaard hoped for when he was meeting up earlier the year with Frans Ludeke and Heynecke Meyer at the Bulls.

Eish no this is a blow hope Cronje’s rehab from this goes well, would have been a good one to have around to rotate with Morne Steyn but at least Fouche is there and is going to have to make the step up big time this year, we cannot have Steyn overplayed as he has the last few years otherwise he will could be a shadow of the great player he is come the Bok games. Read some not nice news/allegations about someone close to him that hope is not true for him, wonder how this will effect Morne’s frame of mind and game this coming weekend, can only wish Morne lots of strength.

Well, the Bulls came off nearly unscathed on Friday without Johan Sadie for a whole 69 Minutes, so the message certainly is that nobody is irreplaceable, except Morné Steyn of course.

    Hehehehe

I’d also like to see young Francois Venter at No 12 and Wynand Meisiekind at No 13, with Zane back at No 15.

Ventertjie played well, defended well, ran well. He’ll be the real deal sooner than later.

Another player who impressed me with his strenght on attack and very hard defence was JJ Engelbrecht, so where to find place for him?

Aikona, the old soldier, was very solid under high balls, chased the uppies with verve, grabbed the ball out the air a couple of times, so those who write him off, do it at their peril.

Bjorn Basson was a bit shaky one minute then chased sublimely the next moment.

Hard choices, there are only 7 spots in the backline as they run out!

With a bit of fine-tuning on the handling the backs will be very good!

The forwards – well Juandre Kruger did what I said he would, he had a massive game. Scrums were strong, and the Bulls loosies were all over their foe on Friday. I think between the loosies and Juandre, that made the difference in the game.

I’m a few percentage points more positive this week compared to with before the first game, but like the Bulls mantra goes – one game at a time.

Cheetahs will be hurting with the close loss to the Lions, so expect them to come out focussed and fired up this weekend in Blingfontein against the Bulls!
