News from Durban is that the Sharks are not offering the Springbok centre Adi Jacobs a contract for 2012.

After not being one of  the first choice centres for the past few seasons, the Sharks have allowed Jacobs’ contract to expire at the end of October 2011 without renewing it. Jacobs was a favorite of Springbok coach Peter de Villiers at the start of his tenure, but has by now spent a frustrating few seasons not being picked for the Springboks.

At the Sharks players of the ilk of Marius Joubert, Meyer Bosman, Stefan Terblanche, Pat Lambie and Andries Strauss have been preferred over Jacobs.

Now the news has broken that WP / Stormers discard, Tim Whitehead, has been signed at the Sharks it has put to rest any ideas of Adi making a comeback.

At Springbok level, Jacque Fourie, Jean de Villiers and Juan de Jongh have been preferred over Jacobs.

It is not yet known if Jacobs has been offered a contract by another union or has been made an offer from overseas.

One day the Boss of this site will email me how to add pictures to my articles.

But on the other hand, perhaps the WP will buy Adi.

Quickly, someone close the border post before he tries to come down here. We have a housing shortage, and it wouldn’t be fair on him anyway

    3 @ Loosehead:
You actually have to save pictures that you want to use to your PC somewhere… easiest way to do it is to google for pictures of the person, right click on the picture, save to file…. save it under a good name somewhere on your PC…

Now use the Insert Picture Icon by clicking on it, browsing to that same picture on your PC… and uploading it, to appear LEFT at the top.

…. I’ll explain re-sizing and cropping and R-T’s actual preferences to the size of pictures later…. for now this might be enough for you to learn for one day….

    Bwahahaha

Was that so hard? Did I do it right boss?

  • 8

    7 @ Loosehead:
    Right!

Now we need to teach you to re-size and / or crop pictures….

Have you got any version of Microsoft Office installed on your PC?

EP player wins Unfair Dismissal Case

An interesting snippet of information snuck into my in-box from the South African Rugby Players Association (SARPA) last night …
Private Arbitrator Louis Vermaak has ruled that the dismissal of former EP Kings flyhalf Regardt van Eyck was unlawful and unfair. Van Eyck, whose contract was terminated after just 3 months of playing at the EP Kings due to poor performance, approached the SARPA to challenge this matter on his behalf.
Formerly with Spanish outfit El Salvador, Van Eyck returned to South Africa and signed a two- year contract with the Port Elizabeth based union. After playing a total of around 160 minutes of rugby at his new team, he was brought in front of the provinces’ Performance Review Committee and advised that his services would no longer be required.
Van Eyck then contacted SARPA and the matter was referred to private arbitration. After a lengthy process (starting in June 2010) which required testimonies from the player, coach and prominent rugby analysts the arbitrator ruled in favour of the player.
The arbitrator ruled that the dismissal was NOT fair and also UNLAWFUL. A further ruling included compensation of an amount of R575 000 is to be paid to Mr Van Eyck by the EP Kings within two weeks of the date of the final ruling.
“This is a land mark ruling confirming that a rugby player is entitled to a fair process and procedure when dealing with his performance just like any other employee in the workplace. Hopefully rugby bodies will take note of this decision and we can avoid similar cases”, says Piet Heymans CEO of SARPA.
I have never heard of Van Eyck, let alone seen him play, but an obvious question would have to be why the hell were the Kings fishing for players in El Salvador in the first place? As a union being touted as the rugby development capital of South Africa, the do seem to have spent a fair amount of time fishing outside that much talked about pool of talent …

Sorry, should read from Tanks site – I am completely dyslexic!

    @ grootblousmile:
Yes Boss.I do. 2007 if I am not mistaken.

    11 @ Loosehead:
One can re-size pictures from within the Admin panel where you write and edit and publish your Article… but it’s not preferable doing it there… much better in the first place to import the correct size pictures and or cropped pictures…

That same Picture of Adi on your PC, go to it, right click on it… choose Open With… and Choose Microsoft Office or Microsoft Office Picture Mangager….

Now that it’s open, click on Edit Pictures at the top…. then use crop on the right to select a portion of the picture, if you’re so inclined and/or use Resize… and go to Percentage of original width and height…. reduce to about 150 x 150 (Thumbnail size)…. SAVE the alteration and Exit Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

Now you have a picture on your PC of the right shape and size, to use….

And some more news from a discard – this time cricket –

Australia have named South African Mickey Arthur as their new head coach, the first foreigner to hold the role.

The former South Africa coach is contracted until after the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

He succeeds Tim Nielsen, who resigned after the tour of Sri Lanka in September, leaving bowling coach Troy Cooley in temporary charge.

“I am confident the talent is there to ensure Australia is successful,” said the 43-year-old Arthur.

    MICKEY ARTHUR FACTFILE

Born: 17 May, 1968 in Johannesburg
Major Teams: Griqualand West, Orange Free State, South Africa A
    First-class batting record: 6,657 runs at 33.45
Teams Coached: Griquas, Eastern Cape, South Africa, Western Australia
Test record as South Africa coach: W22 D7 L16
Arthur coached South Africa from 2005 to 2010, leading them to a first series victory in England for 43 years and a maiden series win in Australia.

He quit in January 2010 after a fall-out with the national board and had most recently been in charge of Western Australia.

His appointment is the latest step in an overhaul of Australian cricket following their 3-1 Ashes humbling on home soil by England at the turn of the year.

Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch and selector Greg Chappell were both ditched, while former Australia rugby international Pat Howard was appointed Cricket Australia’s general manager for team performance.

Arthur, who beat off competition from Australians Steve Rixon, Tom Moody and Justin Langer, said he felt comfortable about becoming the first foreigner to coach the side.

“I don’t think it will matter,” Arthur said. “Ultimately, I guess you want a guy that is perceived to be the best for the job, irrespective of the nationality.”

Arthur is charged with reviving the fortunes of a team which has fallen to fourth in the world Test rankings after dominating the sport through the 1990s and early 2000s.

Australia fans were given hope for a brighter future on Monday when Michael Clarke’s team pulled off a thrilling two-wicket victory over South Africa to tie the series, with 18-year-old fast bowler Pat Cummins producing a man-of-the-match performance on his debut.

“Australian cricket is in a very exciting phase [but] getting to the top of the Test rankings is something that just doesn’t happen, because you need sustainable success over a period of time,” said Arthur.

“We need a real good, strong squad system. I think young players need to be given quality opportunities to develop their games under pressure and hopefully we can create that environment for them to all perform.”

Arthur, who will join a selection panel chaired by former Australian Test batsman John Inverarity, said it was too early for him to speculate on the future of older players like ex-skipper Ricky Ponting, who is 36.

“I’ll defer that to the first selection meeting,” Arthur said. “It’s hard coming in from the outside without knowing what is going on. That’s something for John Inverarity to take up.”

Arthur’s first series in charge will be a two-Test series against New Zealand, starting in Brisbane on 1 December, before Australia host India for a four-Test series starting on 26 December.

Cape Town – Springbok centre Adrian Jacobs is eager to play for the Stormers after his contract with the Sharks was not renewed.

Die Burger newspaper reports that Jacobs’s contract with the Durban-based side was not renewed and that he is interested in playing his rugby in the Cape.

Jacobs was apparently on his way to Cape Town on Tuesday and said he would consider an option from the Stormers if they are interested.
