Schalk Burger and Juan de Jongh have been withdrawn from the Springbok squad as a result of injuries suffered in Saturday’s Currie Cup final.

The pair were scanned in Johannesburg on Monday morning and were immediately ruled out of the tour.

Burger has a broken rib while De Jongh suffered a hairline fracture to his left ankle. Experienced centre Adi Jacobs – who had been called up as a precaution – has been drafted into the tour squad as a replacement for De Jongh.

Burger is replaced by the uncapped Deon Stegmann of the Blue Bulls while his team-mate Zane Kirchner has also been added to squad to restore the party to 30.

“It’s a blow to lose players but we’ve rolled with the punch and already moved on,” said Springbok coach Peter de Villiers.

”We trained without them this morning and we already had contingency plans in mind which we’ve begun to put into operation. It’s not an ideal situation but we’ve all got on with our jobs and are focused only on the players that we have in camp.”

Meanwhile Jean de Villiers (groin), Willem Alberts (calf) and Chiliboy Ralepelle (flu) took no part in either of the Springboks’ two field sessions on Monday. The Springbok team for the test against Ireland will now be named on Thursday due to the injury disruptions.

“We’ll give the players some more time in rehab before we confirm the team,” said De Villiers. “We have the line-up in mind but want to make sure everyone’s OK before making the announcement.

The latest withdrawals take to 13 the number of players who have been forced out of the tour by injury. They are: John Smit, Jaque Fourie, Wynand Olivier, Andries Bekker, Fourie du Preez, Heinrich Brüssow, JP Pietersen, Gurthrö Steenkamp, Butch James, BJ Botha, Ricky Januarie, Schalk Burger and Juan de Jongh.

    Burger has a broken rib
He was brave to soldier on after that.
    Kudus to Schalk.

  • 3

    @ superBul:
Was the rib injury from the Lambie hand off?

  • 4

Stegman is a good choice. I would start him along with Alberts and Juan.

  • 5

    @ superBul:
Probably from the STrauss tackle, when he took about two minutes to stand up….Schalk is tough, he’ll be back sooner than later.

  • 6

A year later Stegmann gets his chance….but he is not in his best form as per last year.
    Predict starting lineup
    Alberts, Spies, Smith.

  • 9

    Eishhhhhh

    …maar bly vir Stegmann & Zane…

    Ek begin seriously twyfel boys!

  • 10

    @ bdb:
Check the game on Saturday…Bismarck is the fetcher….Daniels can be on the bench and if it becomes a problem then he can come on. If Stegmann very quickly gets back to last years form then he can start. lets see how the game pans out first….the NH is normally a year behind us on tactics and we arent playing Oz or NZ. I stick by my choice.

Dit maak my baie kwaad hoe mense nou vir Morne Steyn afskryf. Hy is by verreweg nog die beste losskakel in Suid-Afrika. Sy kicking game is second to none.

“The Vodacom Blue Bulls have secured the services of the most sought after junior player in the country by signing William Small-Smith for the 2011 season.
The brilliant young midfielder, who was head boy of Grey College this year, captained Free State Schools, SA Schools and also led the SA Rugby u.18’s High Performance squad this year.”

  • 15

“Point scoring machines Louis Fouche and Ulrich Beyers have joined the Vodacom Blue Bulls u.21 squad for the 2011 season.
Fouche, who scored 137 points for the Leopards in the Absa u.21-competition and Beyers, who raked up 176 points for Western Province u.19’s, will join the Blue Bulls side that will try to go one better in 2011, after being losing finalists this year.”

Stegmann, who has the best time of 10.9sec over the 100m, has become the 36th Bok from Grey College.

He is also one of nine players in the current group to have matriculated from Grey.

The others are Coenie Oosthuizen, Adriaan Strauss, CJ van der Linde, Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis, Flip van der Merwe, Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn.

Wys vir my een game in ‘n boktrui waar hy beter as average was?

BOD was ‘n up and coming cookwater sentertjie.

Pienaar/Skaapkoppie 15, Aplon 14, Basson 11 Habana 13, JdV 12, Morne 10, Francois 9. Bef@okte backline ouens!

  • 23

jacobs gaan o driscoll aan die raai hou,hy gaan nie weet of hy jacob links of reg wil klop nie.hoeveel minutes het jacobs currie cup gespeel?ek dink die bokke gaan pak kry teen ireland.

  • 24

Ek het heeltemal vergeet van Meyer Bosman! Aplon 15, Basson 11, Banana 14, JdV 13, Bosman 12, Morne 10, Hougie 9.
