Pedrie Wannenburg will have to step out of controversy to play a key role for the Bulls in the Super14 following the news that Dewald Potgieter will miss at least the first two weeks of the tournament with a knee injury.Potgieter had been earmarked to wear the Bulls’ No 7 jersey against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on February 12, but that may now be Wannenburg’s job. He recently confessed to drug and alcohol abuse.

Wannenburg, a veteran of 98 Super rugby games, has shed a few kilograms and is planning to restore his reputation on the field.

Bulls coach Frans Ludeke had decided that Potgieter would be used mainly as an openside flank this year, but he won’t have any problems with Wannenburg there.

He was adamant that Wannenburg was not out of favour and did not intend going into the Super14 without him.

“Pedrie is a valuable member of our squad. His experience can’t be bought, and even less his knowledge of the Bulls’ goals,” said Ludeke.

“Depth in this series is definitely crucial, especially when you start picking up injuries.”

The Bulls are certainly better off in terms of depth this year than last with regards certain positions.

He is delighted by the return of hooker Gary Botha and the arrival of prop Bees Roux. This will boost the Bulls’ scrumming, something Ludeke realises will be a talking point again this year.

“We saw during the Boks’ November tour that the focus cannot be shifted away from the scrums. We will be out to establish it as a core component of the Bulls’ game again.”

Dieselfde geld vir ouens soos Stephan Dippenaar, Watermeyer. Net jammer Jakes vd W moet nog ‘n week of twee in Jap scrap bly omdat hulle die naweek gewen het. Agree with Blou Bul in NZ, you play as well and as hard as you train. Gelukkig is altwee knie beserings nie ernstige beserings nie. GO BULLS

    3. Hey Shannow,
Its not looking good in the Bulls camp regarding injuries, I agree with you. BUT, if they are doing this to each other imagine what they will do to the opposition. I’ve always believed that you play how you train, if you take it easy in training you will not play with the required level on intensity. I say keep at it Bulls, train as hard as you can, and destroy anyone who tries to stand in the way of a 3rd S14 title!!!
