There is no doubt which team is No.1 but can the All Blacks and Wallabies hold on to their top three places?

1. (2) South Africa – Current IRB ranking: 1 (2)
How good are the Springboks? They have yet to play away this year but nor have they faced a weak team. The road trip coming up will tell whether this is a good or great team.

2. (1) New Zealand – Current IRB ranking: 2 (1)
The Springboks showed that this is definitely not the New Zealand team of old but they were still good enough to beat the Wallabies. The Richie McCaw factor is no longer enough, they need Dan Carter.

3. (3) Australia – Current IRB ranking: 3 (3)
They failed in their only big test of the season but that will be forgotten if they can beat the Boks in Cape Town on Saturday. Any takers? Anyone?

4. (4) Ireland – Current IRB ranking: 4 (4)
The The South Africans’ performances so far this Tri Nations series puts the Lions’ effort in perspective. With the core of that team made up of Irish and Welsh players, the Wallabies had better watch out.

5. (5) Wales – Current IRB ranking: 8 (6)
Another country that can take heart from the Springboks’ performances. The Welsh will no doubt fancy their chances against the southern hemisphere big boys in November.

6. (6) France Current IRB ranking: 5 (5)
Not performing as well as they would like. Is the influx of foreign players in the Top 14 affecting the national side? Some think so.

7. (7) England Current IRB ranking: 7 (7)
So the new saviour of English rugby is the old one. All eyes will be on Jonny Wilkinson as he stuts his stuff with Toulon in the Top 14.

8. (8) Argentina Current IRB ranking: 6 (6)
We may not see so much of the Pumas in this part of the world but we will see more of their dynamic fly-half Juan Martin Hernandez after he signed a one-year deal with Sharks. Good business for both parties.

9. (9) Fiji Current IRB ranking: 9 (9)
The best team of the three islander countries and with Samoa withdrawing from the Pacific alliance they can concentrate on elevating their national team to greater heights.

10. (10) Scotland Current IRB ranking: 10 (10)
A home nation they cannot take much from the Lions’ performances in the Republic – they barely contributed to it.
