Pieter Jordaan, Johannesburg – Earl Rose appears to have run out of chances at the Lions.

Earl Rose (Gallo)

The erratic utility back was nowhere to be seen at the Lions’ training session at the Johannesburg Stadium on Tuesday.

The match day 22 for Saturday’s Currie Cup match against the Blue Bulls was to be selected from Tuesday’s training quad.

Rose ,25, has been the Lions’ fullback in the absence of the injured Louis Ludik. However, his place is in jeopardy after another poor performance last Saturday against Western Province,

Rose may lose his place to another Earl – Earl Lewis from the University of Johannesburg. Lewis trained at fullback on Tuesday.

Rose is probably not the only Lions player that is due to get the chop. Wing Henno Mentz may also be axed after his poor performance against WP.

Rose and Mentz have not shaped in the Currie Cup. Johan Jackson, who sustained a knee injury against Griquas, may return as a wing.

The return of Cobus Grobbelaar (flank) and Willem Alberts (No 8 ) following their recovery from injury appears to be a certainty.

Pieter Engelbrecht trained at inside centre and may replace Doppies la Grange. Another centre – Walter Venter – is training again.

However, it is believed that he has lost 6kg after being sidelined with swine flu.

Rose’s omission will be the one that will raise the most eyebrows. Springbok coach Peter de Villiers rates him highly as a flyhalf and believes he can still add value to the national team in the future.

However, Rose has become a target for jeering from spectators and it has not been limited to away matches.

Love the quote I read about Earl Rose “My Granny can run faster than him” !! Was this a fair comment?

Perhaps the person quoting this had a very speedy Granny!!

2 @carol Carol, it is a throwback to a number of years back when the then winger of the Sharks, Kabous v/d Westhuizen, suggested his grandmother could have scored the tries he did. This was in response to a few run-in tries he scored in a match…

Kabous looked a bit like a Grandma, imagine if those locks were grey(or purple) ?

    My wishes have come true.

I asked the question of a Rugby aquaintance during the game how long the poor supporters had to endure this nonsense for.

Having got rid of sh1t administrators, can we now please get rid of the underperforming / errtic players? Looks like the Rugby Gods were listening.
