Cape Town – The introduction of Heinrich Brussouw to the Springbok mix has made Australia’s opponents in Saturday’s Tri-Nations encounter at Newlands far more dangerous opponents.

That is the view of Wallaby coach Robbie Deans, who on Thursday attended his first press conference since arriving late in South Africa to be in New Zealand for the funeral of his father.

After watching the two Tests the Boks played against New Zealand from afar, as well as the South African series against the British and Irish Lions, Deans believes the addition of Brussow has made a team that was already good even better.

“Well he broke the mold (for what South Africa looks for in a loose-forward) didn’t he, so he must be a very good player if he can be selected into their side,” said Deans.

“The Boks have always played with a lot of aggression and they will still play with that aggression with Brussow in their side, but he brings a subtlety, an edge and a dimension to their approach that the South Africans did not have before. That will make them a lot more dangerous, and they were already a dangerous team.”

Deans ironically was talking soon after naming a squad in which he had replaced one of his team’s recognised fetchers, Phil Waugh, who is very much in the Brussow mold. Peter Hynes returns from injury in a straight swap with Waugh that reintroduces a four/three split between forwards and backs on the Australian bench.

But in George Smith the Wallabies have one of the best breakdown specialists in world rugby wearing their No 6 jersey, and he is also well covered by David Pocock. There is no doubt that Deans rates Brussow highly, and considers him a major threat to his own team’s intentions of getting back on the winning track on Saturday.

“He has great instincts, he knows when to be where, he sets himself up in the right positions, and then when he is there he does very well in the battle for the ball,” said Deans.

“He is only 23 and is obviously a great find for the Springboks. In the last few Tests he has played extremely well, and he picks his moments very well. He has added a different element to the Boks.”

Am I allowed to have a dig at P Divvie? Keep in mind the only reason Brussow got a chance was because of what happened to Schalk and a few injuries, he was not even in the original training squad, let alone the match 22 at the beginning…
